Fatigue is a major concern for commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers as it can significantly impair their ability to operate vehicles safely, leading to accidents and potentially fatal consequences. Various factors contribute to fatigue, including inadequate sleep, long working hours, physical and mental exertion, monotonous tasks, and irregular work schedules. Combined, these factors can lead to a decline in alertness, slower reaction times, impaired decision-making, and decreased overall performance, all of which can pose significant risks while driving.
Problem-solving, quick decision-making and good judgement are all skills that CMV drivers need to drive safely. But if you're not getting a healthy amount of sleep, it can seriously impair these abilities. In fact, being awake for 24 hours straight can affect your driving as much as if you were legally drunk. And if you don't get enough sleep over an extended period of time, you can become "fatigued"… which can increase the chances of having an accident when you're behind the wheel even more.
